9 Easy Tricks to Make Your Dryer Dry Faster

Waiting for the dryer to finish is one of the biggest bottlenecks in any household routine. By applying a few simple mechanical and physics-based tricks, you can cut your drying time in half and reduce your energy bill simultaneously.

1. The "Clean Screen" Habit

It sounds basic, but even a thin layer of lint reduces airflow enough to add 10 to 15 minutes to a cycle. Clean the lint screen before every load to ensure the heating element can move air efficiently.

2. Use the "Dry Towel" Hack

Throw one clean, dry bath towel into a load of wet laundry. The dry towel absorbs excess moisture from the wet items immediately, speeding up the overall evaporation process. Remove the towel after 15–20 minutes to prevent it from adding bulk.

3. Shake It Out

Don't just dump a tangled ball of wet clothes from the washer into the dryer. Shake each item out as you transfer it. This creates more surface area for the hot air to hit, preventing "wet pockets" in the middle of jeans or towels.

4. Don't Overload the Drum

A dryer needs air to circulate. If the drum is packed to the top, the clothes will just slide around in a single mass. Filling the dryer only halfway allows the clothes to "tumble," which is essential for rapid moisture removal.

5. Inspect the Outside Vent Flap

Check the exhaust vent on the outside of your house while the dryer is running. If the flap isn't blowing wide open, you have a blockage. If the air can't get out, the moisture stays in the drum, and your clothes stay damp.

6. Use Wool Dryer Balls

Wool dryer balls bounce between the layers of clothes, physically separating them so hot air can reach the center of the load. They also absorb a small amount of moisture and reduce static without the waxy buildup of dryer sheets.

7. Clean the Moisture Sensor

Inside the drum, there are usually two small metal strips near the lint trap. These are moisture sensors. Over time, dryer sheets can coat them in a thin film, "blinding" the dryer so it thinks clothes are dry when they aren't. Wipe them with a bit of rubbing alcohol once a month.

8. Run Back-to-Back Loads

If you have multiple loads to do, run them one after another. This takes advantage of the "retained heat" already in the dryer drum and the internal components, so the machine doesn't have to spend the first 10 minutes of the second load just warming up.

9. Maximize the Washer Spin Cycle

The fastest way to dry clothes is to get the water out before they ever reach the dryer. Use a high-speed spin cycle on your washing machine. Removing that extra pound of water in the washer is much cheaper and faster than evaporating it with heat.

Efficiency is Key

Every minute you shave off your drying time extends the life of your clothes and your appliance. If these tricks don't work, it may be time for a professional duct cleaning to remove deep-seated lint blockages.
