How to Fix Squeaky Floors

Squeaky floors can be annoying, especially at night or in high-traffic areas. The noise usually happens when floorboards, subflooring, or fasteners move against each other. The right fix depends on whether you can access the floor from above, below, or both.

Why Floors Squeak

Find the Exact Spot

Fixing From Below

For small squeaks between boards, powdered graphite or talcum powder may reduce friction temporarily. Work it into the seams, then clean the surface. This is usually a short-term fix, not a structural repair.

Control Humidity

Because wood movement contributes to squeaks, maintaining stable indoor humidity can help prevent seasonal noise. Use a humidifier or dehumidifier as needed.
